Former minister of Niger Delta affairs, Godswill Akpabio, has been chosen to represent Akwa Ibom north-west in the national parliament.

Anthony Udoh, a returning officer for the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), proclaimed Akpabio the winner on Monday.

The former minister, who ran under the banner of the All Progressives Congress (APC), received 115,401 votes to defeat Emmanuel Enoidem of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who received 69,880 votes.

He was in the running for the party’s presidential nomination, but he backed another candidate.

Udom Ekpoudom, a former deputy inspector-general of police (DIG), won the APC primary for the Akwa Ibom north-west senatorial district before the APC presidential primary.

Ekperikpe Ekpo also won a parallel primary that was subsequently cancelled due to irregularities.

According to reports, a rerun held on June 8 produced Akpabio as the exercise’s victor.

However, INEC eliminated the APC from its published list of candidates in June 2022.

The party and Akpabio sought redress from the court.

Emeka Nwite, the trial judge, ruled in September 2022 that INEC violated the law when it refused to recognize and publish Akpabio’s name, despite the fact that the APC had named him as a candidate.

Ekpoudom appealed the trial court’s verdict because he was dissatisfied with it.

In its November 2022 ruling, the court of appeal overturned the trial court’s decision and removed Akpabio as the party’s candidate.

In January, however, the supreme court reversed the appellate court’s ruling and upheld Akpabio’s election as the candidate for the Akwa Ibom north-west senatorial district.

David Umahi, the governor of Ebonyi state, has been proclaimed the victor of the Ebonyi south senatorial election.

INEC’s returning officer, Augustine Egwu, announced the results at the Afekpo North LGA headquarters.

Umahi, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), received a total of 28,378 votes to defeat Linus Okorie of the Labour Party (LP) with 25,496 votes and Ifeanyi Eleje of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with 11,378 votes.
